September, 2000 Simon Callow stars in his new one-man show "The Mystery of Charles Dickens" now playing at the Comedy Theatre (44 20 7369 1731). Callow portrays Dickens and 35 of Dickens' characters. "Stones in His Pockets" has transferred to the Duke of York's Theatre (44 20 7565 5000). Sean Campion and Conleth Hill play all 15 characters in the award-winning play about what happens to a part of rural Ireland when Hollywood arrives. The premiere of "In Flame" by Charlotte Jones (Circle Critics Award Winner) will be at the New Ambassadors (44 20 7369 1791) to Oct. 28. Kerry Fox ("Shallow Grave") plays a woman with problem relatives, friends and a married lover. Jenny Seagrove and Christopher Cazenove will appear briefly at the Lyric (44 20 7494 5045) in "Brief Encounter", opening September 11 for a short run. Claire Bloom, Amanda Root and David Calder star in "Conversations After a Burial", a new play by Yasmina Reza ("Art", "The Unexpected Man"). Opening Sept. 12 at the Almeida Theatre (44 20 7359 4404) with a possible transfer to the West End. A new play by Nick Whitby "To the Green Fields Beyond" runs from Sept. 14-Nov. 25 at the Donmar Warehouse (44 20 7369 1732). Dougray Scott and Ray Winstone lead a distinguished cast. Oscar-winner Sam Mendes ("American Beauty") directs. A new production of "The Blue Room" by David Hare opens at the Haymarket Theatre (44 20 7930 8800) Oct 2. Michael Higgs and Camilla Power star. "Fame" makes a fourth appearance in the West End, opening October 3 at the Victoria Palace (44 20 7834 1317. Jeffrey Archer makes his stage debut in his new play "The Accused". The outcome of the story will depend on the audience's decision as the jury. Edward Petherbridge, Tony Britton and Edward de Souza co-star. Michael Pennington plays a jealous actor who disguises himself to test his wife's fidelity. She's played by Greta Scacchi. Directed by Janet Suzman. "The Graduate", starring Jerry Hall as "Mrs. Robinson", has been extended to Feb. 10, 2001. Booking for new period of Oct. 23 to Feb. 10 opens Sept. 18. Gielgud Theatre (44 20 7494 5065) The Andrew Lloyd Webber/Ben Elton musical "The Beautiful Game" opens at the Cambridge Theatre (44 20 7494 5054) on Sept. 26. Noel Coward's "Fallen Angels" rises again on Oct. 25 at the Apollo Theatre (44 20 7494 5070). Starring Felicity Kendal and Frances de la Tour. "A Doll's House" opens Nov. 2 at the New Ambassadors (44 20 7836 6111). Starring Anne-Marie Duff, Paterson Joseph, and Pip Donaghy. Michael Gambon stars in the revival of Harold Pinter's "The Caretaker" at the Comedy Theatre (44 20 7369 1731) from Nov. 15. Rupert Graves and Douglas Hodge co-star with Patrick Marber directing. Jessica Lange and Charles Dance open in "Long Day's Journey into Night" Nov. 21 at the Lyric (44 20 7494 5045). Anna Friel makes her London theatre debut in "Lulu" at the Old Vic Theatre (44 20 7494 5372) from March 7, 2001 (previews from Feb. 22). Booking opens Nov. 20. Sir Derek Jacobi returns to the London stage later this year in "God Only Knows", a new play by Hugh Whitemore. The story is about the impact of the arrival of a fugitive on a group on holiday in Tuscany. Date and venue to be confirmed. Award-winning "Copenhagen" is now booking to Oct. 28 at the Duchess Theatre (44 171 494 5075). "Fosse" is now booking through January 13, 2001 at the Prince of Wales Theatre (44 20 7839 5972). From Oct. 24, the cast of "Art" will be Warren Mitchell, John Fortune and Ken Campbell. The Wyndham's Theatre (44 20 7369 1746). "Strangers on a Train" by Patricia Highsmith and made into a film by Alfred Hitchcock has been adapted for the stage. Stephen Billlington and Alan Cox play the strangers. Now on tour hoping for a West End transfer. "A Family Affair," the story of an ill-fated family gathering, starring Rik Magall, Steven Pacey, Anne Reid and Susan Woolridge, opens in Bath Oct. 16 prior to the West End. Bernadette Peters may make her West End debut in Stephen Soldheim's "Gypsy" next year. Also possibly headed for the West End next year, is Peter Bowles in Ron Hutchingson's new play "Beau Brummell."
