Archive News - July, 2000 Alan Ayckbourne's new plays "House" and Garden" will open at the National Theatre (44 20 7452 3000) on Aug. 9, with previews from July 29. David Haig and Jane Asher star in the plays which run simultaneously with the actors moving from one to the other. They are set on a country estate on the day of the village fete. They can be watched in either order or seen alone and describe activities on a single day. Ayckbourne also wrote "The Norman Conquests", a series of plays linked together, each from a different character's perspective. Jessica Lange returns to the West End Nov. 21 in "Long Day's Journey into Night". Charles Dance co-stars. Donmar Warehouse (44 20 7369 1732). Jeffrey Archer makes his stage debut in "The Accused", his drama in which the audience is the jury. Edward Petheridge, Tony Britton and Edward de Souza also star. Due in the West End in Nov. after a regional tour. Noel Coward's "Fallen Angels" stars Felicity Kendal and Frances de la Tour as two married friends waiting for the same lover. Opens Sept. 5 in Windsor and due in the West End in Oct. Woody Allen is working with Marvin Hamlish on a musical version of "Bullets over Broadway." Ray Winstone stars in Nick Whitby's "To the Green Fields Beyond", directed by Sam Mendes. Donmar Warehouse (44 20 7369 1732). Sept. 25-Nov. 25. Greta Shacchi will star in "The Guardsman", a comedy about a jealous actor who disguises himself in an attempt to test the fidelity of his actress wife. Expected this fall after a short tour. David Hare's new play, "My Zinc Bed", will star Julia Ormond, Tom Wilkinson and Steven Mackintosh. Opening mid-Sept. at the Royal Court Theatre (44 20 7730 5174). Kathleen Turner's nude scene in "The Graduate" made it a sellout. Beginning July 31, Jerry Hall will take over the role of "Mrs. Robinson". The play is expected to run at least to the end of the year. Gielgud Theatre (44 20 7494 5065) A new play, "God and Stephen Hawking" by Robin Hawdon (The Mating Game) will begin a regional tour in Bath (44 1225 448 844) on August 22. Hawdon collaborated with Hawking's first wife for this unauthorized biography of the famous physicist. Robert Hardy ("All Creatures Great and Small" and numerous other film and televison credits) stars as God, Einstein, Newton and Pope John Paul. Stephen Boxer stars as Hawking. A fall opening in the West End is expected. Award-winning playwright ("Art") Yasmina Reza's new play "Conversations After a Burial" will be at the Almeida Theatre (44 20 7359 4404) from Sept. 7-Oct. 21. The plot involves secrets revealed at the graveside of one man's father. Casting not confirmed as yet. Calista Flockhart ("Ally McBeal") is rumored to be starring in an as yet undisclosed classic American play next year at the Savoy. Vanessa and Corin Redgrave are to open in "The Cherry Orchard" at the National Theatre (44 20 7452 3000) in Sept.
